Game of the Year 2025

Koira is a beautiful and heartfelt adventure with enchanting musical design and a story that made you feel for its characters, without using a single spoken word. It very nearly took home best visuals as well, so it’s only fitting that a title which manages to accrue two wins and a narrow second place in another category gets to be crowned Belgian Game Of the Year.

When a world is governed by the fundemental elements metal, sugar, meat, plastic and smoke, you know you’re in for a wild ride. OFF manages to be just the right mix of classic RPG maker goodness in an unsettling, fourth wall breaking universe. A title that would go on to inspire other genre-defining indie RPG’s, finally brought to modern platforms for everyone to experience.

The advantage of VR is that nobody can see you cry when this gutwrenching emotional story about dementia hits closer to home than ever before. Seeing the reality fading before your very eyes yields not only a unique experience but also a unique perspective on the topic. A short but powerful tale only rivaled by its absolutely stellar voice acting, especially in Dutch.

RUNNER-UPS

Wait, that’s pictionary in 3D with power ups? Yes, and it’s just as fun as it sounds. A robust game idea that is carried by a just as robust art and audiodesign. And while scrambling together four friends, let alone four friends with a VR headset, is hard, it doesn’t deter from the fun that Wait What’s That is packaging.

RUNNER-UPS

30 Birds’ blend of projected Persian art with a whacky – if not substance induced – world makes for a wholly unique visual experience. And yet it’s not only for show, as the game design fully supports the idea, carried even further by the stellar and just as whacky writing.

RUNNER-UPS

Just like Journey made us experience cooperation without communication, Koira managed to make us a shed a tear without saying a single word. A feat that would be impossible if not for the audio design that we crown today. To see the team turning instrumentation into not only voices but full on verbs, has to be experienced at least once.

RUNNER-UPS

Best Narrative

And just as Koira achieved its emotional impact through its sound, its story played just as vital of a role. It hits right in the feels and makes Koira earn this prize not despite a lack of words throughout the adventure, but rather proudly because its lack thereof.
